Prior to Arrival

Now that you are registered for the 2024 Focus on Book Arts Conference, it’s time to figure out how you are going to get here, are you bringing all the right stuff, what will there be to do in the evenings and during other free time, and so on.

Important Things to Bring to FOBA

Workshop Supplies: review the supplies list associated with each of the workshops you are taking and gather up your supplies. The list of materials was emailed in your registration packet and is available under the workshop descriptions or see supplies listed by workshop.

Bedding & Towels: Linens and towels are not provided. The beds are Twin XL.

If you purchased a bedding package with your registration, it will be waiting for you at check-in.

  • Linen Package includes: 1 pillow, 2 blankets, two flat sheets, a towel and a washcloth.
  • Towels are cotton
  • Linens (the sheets and pillowcases) are 55% cotton and 45% polyester. 
  • The two blankets may either be 100% cotton or a cotton/polyester blend.
  • Pillows are plastic (not linen) covered, like a hospital may use. Pillow case is included.
  • Laundry facilities are free to use for anyone staying in the dorms, and are located on floors 2-4. You will need to provide your own laundry detergent and/or fabric softener sheets.
  • WOU is a smoke-free environment. Therefore, smoking of any type is not allowed on campus grounds. This includes the use of “inhalant delivery systems,” which include e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other devices.
  • WOU is also a drug-free campus, as required by the Drug-Free Schools an Communities Act. This includes marijuana.
  • Possession and/or discharge of firearms, weapons, ammunition, fireworks, explosives and highly flammable materials are not allowed in residence halls or anywhere on University property.
  • Hoverboards and drones are not allowed on the WOU Campus.
  • The only animal allowed on Campus are animals that assist disabled guests. Please let us know if you will be bringing a service animal to campus.
  • Pets and comfort animals cannot be accommodated at this time.

DRIVING INFORMATION

Approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes from the Portland International Airport (PDX); or 1 hour and 10 minutes from the Eugene Airport (EUG). Salem is only 20 mins from campus, and in under 10 minutes you can be in the center of either Dallas or Independence.  

TRANSIT INFORMATION

Take the Oregon Express Shuttle from the Portland Airport to Salem (takes about 2 hours, with 16 trips per a day, $43-48 pp), and then transfer to the local bus service (Cherriots, bus route #40), from the Salem transit center to Monmouth.

AIRLINE INFORMATION

Airlines with flight service into Portland (PDX) include Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Boutique Air, British Airways, Condor, Delta Air Lines, Frontier, Hawaiian, Icelandair, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit, Sun Country, United Airlines, Volaris, and Westjet.

Airlines with flight service into Eugene (EUG) include Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Avelo Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.(add this text) 

Note: There is now commercial air service connecting to the Salem Airport (SLE), through Avelo Airlines. This service is new, but sounds like it could be a great new option!

NEED A RIDE FROM SALEM?

We have rented the campus Wolf Van to help shuttle attendees to and from Western Oregon University just for the Focus on Book Arts conference! The Shuttle will be available June 25th, June 30th and July 1st and will be open to all conference attendees, instructors, and volunteers.

All we ask is that you “tip the driver” a minimum of $8 when you ride, to help us cover the costs of the rental. If you don’t have cash, you can also make a donation when you check-in for registration. Any extra donations will go directly into FOBA’s general fund and will help cover other costs of this years conference.

Once we get an idea of everyone’s approximate arrival times, we will set-up a schedule of pickup times at the Salem Train & Greyhound Bus Station parking lot.

Note – if you are part of our early arrival staff, instructors or volunteers, please use this form and fill out your arrival date as June 23rd or 24th , and then we can coordinate a volunteer to come pick you up in their own vehicle on either of those days
