Artist Statement

My Name is Georgia by Jeanette Winter, published in 1998, celebrates the life of iconic artist Georgia O’Keeffe, my favorite creative. A Tribute to Georgia is my excavated interpretation of this wonderful children’s book. When I embarked on this project, I wasn’t sure how it would end up, but knew that I wanted to keep all the illustrations. As I cut them into circles and hinged them with washi tape, they seemed to naturally lend themselves to a felt gaucho hat, a whimsical expression of Georgia and her unique style. This is one of my best loved excavations, simply for its joyful celebration of the life of Georgia!

Materials and Techniques

This art book is an excavation of a popular children’s book. The inner pages of the book were removed and repurposed into a circular inner accordion book that is adhered within the well by a magnet in the hat brim. The well is constructed of several layers of book board that was sanded and finished with washi tape and part of the book dust jacket. The “gaucho hat” accordion book incorporates the illustrations from the excavated interior as well as felt, leather, feathers, and magnets. When fully extended the accordion is more than seven feet long!
