Artist Statement

“Clematis Journal” was inspired by a visit to the Rogerson Clematis Garden near Lake Oswego, Oregon. We had traveled from our very gray, overcast home to Portland in search of spring flowers, and were astounded and amazed by the clematis in bloom. The colors and varieties enchanted me and I was determined to create a design with clematis.

I stitched the clematis on Cialinen bookcloth using stranded cotton threads and Contemporary Stumpwork techniques to pad and create dimension. I completed the book using the sewn boards binding method, which I learned from Karen Hanmer through San Francisco Center for the Book.
