Artist Statement

For “Wild Berries of the Pacific Northwest” I used stumpwork techniques to recreate the berries that grow wild in the redwood forests where we live. We love to hike in Prairie Creek; at the end of the trail, there are wild blackberries and huckleberries that the local wildlife feast on. I also added strawberries to represent the tiny wild strawberries that we found growing in Arcata’s Community Forest.

This piece uses Cialinen bookcloth with surface embroidered and detached leaves. The huckleberries are created using a wrapping method. The blackberries are padded slips worked in French Knots that are then applied to the background. The strawberries are needlelace worked over padding, with needlelace sepals. I also wrapped wire to create tendrils.
