Artist Statement

This floppy little book—and the poem it contains—was inspired by the desert landscapes and windscapes of southern California. Themes of fragility, attention, language, and scarcity are examined through the textual and physical choices made to create “minimum responses.”

Materials and Techniques

“minimum responses” is a limited-edition, hand-printed artist book created by Genevieve Kaplan in November 2025. The 20-page book features a single poem written by the author, printed on colorful joss paper using hand-set rubber type and blue ink. Limited edition of 8 copies, varied colors, bound with brown thread.

Note: Variation in print quality—as well as letter-substitution, as dictated by the small quantity of each letter available and the condition of the type—is embraced; some words or lines may not be fully legible.
