Artist Statement
This piece is a roughly life-sized portrait of a North American pitcher plant, Sarracenia flava, from my own carnivorous plant garden. I’ve always had a deep interest in botany and natural sciences, and I’m especially fond of carnivorous plants, which have so much personality and are such unique examples of adaptive evolution. I carved this as a texture study to see how much fine detail I could fit into a 4” shina woodblock, and printed it by hand with a glass baren on Japanese paper.
Materials and Techniques
Linocut print (left—final print; right—partially carved block).
