Lorraine Crowder – Wish You Were Here

FOBA 2021 Challenge Book

Technique and materials used:

I identified sixteen places in the San Francisco bay area from which I might send a Wish You Were Here postcard. I printed out old USGS topo maps of the area and made sixteen 4″ X 6″ collages on the maps with a base of 140 lb. watercolor paper. I bound the cards using Canson mi-teintes paper and Grafix Dura-Lar .005” Ultra-Clear Film so that the front and back of the card was visible. The covers show all 16 of the cards and were printed on canvas coated for digital printing.

About the work:

My book came out of Wish You Were Here a collaborative project between book artists from seven book arts groups coast to coast. I was inspired by an online class called Tiny Tattered Houses with Jennifer Chamberlin — which was my first collage project. My quite literal response was to make a collaged postcard for 16 great places to visit in the bay area. I made a set of postcards for each of my two groups and a set for myself. The cards show where I live and how my heart appreciates this very special area.
