British psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst Edward John Bowlby characterized secure attachment as providing a safe haven as well as a secure base for exploration. Secure attachment is the important factor for people to ground. ふたつの家/Two Homes was created for a part of the MFA thesis project as a metaphor of my attachment to the environments where I was raised: my home in Japan where I spent my childhood, and my home in Chicago which is a book bindery where I studied with my great mentors. I feel relief when I remember my home in Japan, and the memory of the book bindery encourages me to challenge new things. Using letterpress and monotype printing, a house-shaped French-door accordion book lets people read about two homes at the same time. It invites people to feel two kinds of homes and to remember their own. It is the book of affirmation for people to live as they are.
Kazumi Seki (Yokohama, Japan)
Kazumi Seki is a visual and performance artist whose artworks take a variety of forms such as artist’s books, interactive installations, and projects on a socially engaged platform. Currently living in Yokohama, Japan, Seki was born and raised in Japan where she earned a BA in psychology at Japan Women’s University. After that, Seki had continuing education at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where she was trained in book art, letterpress, and other printmaking techniques. At Columbia College Chicago, Seki earned a MFA, and she worked to go beyond the conventional concept of a book.
