The inspiration for this book was a visit to a giant redwood tree, the mother of a grove of redwoods. My own mother had passed away just a few weeks prior, and she was very much like this tree: a resilient presence who created an endlessly renewable ecosystem that sustains further generations. I wrote the loosely rhyming story in as few words as possible, without beginning or end, and illustrated it to balance daylight/darkness and life/stillness. The moebius strip form is a literal expression of infinity, and reinforces the meaning of the story. Fabricating it was a unique challenge, but well worth the effort for its sculptural qualities.
