Artist Statement

My family immigrated to the United States from England in 1951, before I was born, and bought a house in a suburb of Los Angeles, California. It’s not too much of an exaggeration to say that we lived outside. The house was small and lacked central air conditioning, so it was more comfortable in the backyard. Important things happened here, some etched into my memory and some prompted by the hundreds of photos my grandmother took in the front and back yards. She was a master gardener, and my grandfather could build anything, so it was a stunning garden.
