Artist Statement
North America has lost almost three billion birds since 1970. “Decline of the North American Avifauna,” published in Science, 2019, was the first-ever widespread avian population assessment. My books explore this ecological crisis. USGS topographic maps are specific to the habitat of each bird species. Maps are circa 1970, the same year data collection began. Each book presents information about each bird species, contrasting with a 19th century poem by Emily Dickinson. Dickinson’s poetry was written long before these avian species began disappearing by the billions. The bird paintings are evocative of ornithological illustration.
