Materials Glossary

Awl or piercer: awls are stainless steel shafts with a sharp tip. They are used for poking holes in paper, boards, leather, and other materials for sewing. Awls come in a variety of thicknesses for punching different sized holes.  

Beeswax for sewing thread: 100% beeswax used for coating thread and burnishing paper.

Bookbinding needle: sewing needle with a large eye and slightly blunt point to reduce snagging thread. The needle eye is sized to accommodate sturdy bookbinding thread.

Bookbinding thread: strong thread for bookbinding that will not stretch or break. Linen is traditional and may be waxed or unwaxed. 

Bookcloth: paper or synthetic material-backed fabric for covering book covers and boxes. It can be found to purchase or you can make your own. 

Bonefolder: dull-edged hand tool used to fold and crease paper, bookcloth, and other materials. It can be made of plastic, bone, Teflon, or other materials. 

Embroidery floss: six-strand cotton sewing thread that can be separated. Can also be purchased in two and three strands. 

Eraser shield: small stainless steel plate that guides precise erasures with apertures in several shapes. 

Glue brush: washable brush for applying adhesives

Glue stick: adhesive paste applicator in stick form. 

Heat gun: an electric hot air gun that directs high heat to a specific targeted area. Often used for embossing and melting.

Metal ruler with cork backing: stainless-steel rulers with an anti-slip cork backing. Measurements in centimeters/millimeters and inches.

Microspatula: stainless steel tool that assists in lifting and separating pages and applying adhesive in small areas. 

Punching cradle: wood, metal, bookboard, or plastic V-shaped tool to facilitate punching holes in paper signatures.

PVA: polyvinyl acetate, an acid-free, high-tack, fast-drying bookbinding adhesive.

Self-healing cutting mat: gridded double-sided protective cutting mat surface. Works with both straight and rotary cutter blades. Made of PVC materials to reseal surface cuts and keep blades sharp.

Sewing needles: needles for hand sewing.

Snap-off blade knife: cutting tool with a ratchet wheel blade lock and snap-off blades. Available in large and small sizes.

Teflon folder: folder made of Teflon instead of bone. Teflon folders are different from traditional bone folders because they will not glaze or mar delicate papers or fabrics. They are also used for wet handmade paper work.

Tweezers with a point: tweezers are small stainless-steel hand tools used for grasping small objects. 

Utility knife: heavy-duty scoring and cutting knife with replaceable blades. Usually requires a screwdriver to replace blades. Blade retracts into the handle, and there is storage in the handle for extra blades. 

X-Acto knife: small knife that holds replaceable blades. Handles might be stainless or cushioned. Blade is tightened by a hexagonal knob that also prevents rolling.
