Kristi Galbraith – Jeanie

FOBA 2022 Faculty/Staff Exhibit

Artist Statement

I created this collage in honor of my mom, Jeanie. She encouraged me to pursue art at a young age, and to keep at it. It includes a few of the papers she created, as well as a portion of some letters she had written to my father while he was in the Navy. The photo of her at age 4 was taken on the family farm in Cloverdale, Oregon – a place I also have fond memories of. She is wearing her ever present smile, and so I surrounded her with Turquoise, one of her favorite colors.

Materials & Technique

Jeanie is a collage of various painted, marbled and textured papers, antique sheet music, hand written letters and lists, and a childhood photo of her. The edges of the photo are accented with lace, embroidery, buttons, small braids and beads that I found in her stash of ephemera.

About Kristi Galbraith

Kristi Galbraith is a paper & book artist who enjoys merging her design and photography background with artwork and books made by hand. She spent the pandemic refining her paper marbling skills, and exploring more mixed media collage – and loves the textures that are created by layering papers, paint, and stitching. Kristi also volunteers for and serves on the Focus on Book Arts (FOBA) Board, and assists them in all things related to graphic design and photography. When she isn’t traveling – Kristi splits her time between her home in Portland Oregon, and her studio in Culver, Oregon – creating art and relaxing with her husband, Gregg, and her cat, Puka Shell.
