Jamila Rufaro – Circle

Artist Statement

Circle is as much about the geometric shape as it is about extending the life of paper—giving paper a new step in the circle of its life. Book pages, sheet music, maps, notebook paper, magazine, catalog and ledger pages peek through adding depth and texture to each page. My work is often about repurposing. This piece combined media in a way that I had not done before. The subject of circles seemed limiting at times (a few squares snuck in). Circle expanded my vision of what could be done with circles, rings, holes, dots, spots, drops and hoops!

Materials & Technique

Mixed media Long-stitch book of recycled paper covered with gesso and adorned with other paper, machine stitching, die-cuts, rubber stamps, stencil work, washi tape, grommets, candy wrappers and a couple of paper clips!

About Jamila Rufaro

Jamila Rufaro creates mixed media artworks, sculptures and artist’s book art. By applying abstraction, Rufaro tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and informal parallels, luring the viewer to make new associations.

Her mixed media artworks are often about contact with architecture and basic living elements. Space and landscape are examined in less obvious ways and sometimes developed in absurd ways. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and interpretation becomes multifaceted.
