Curiosity and love of nature are persistent themes in my work. I live in Southern California. In making this book I took a map of California and marked a variable swath from west to east, from the beaches and bluffs on the west to the Colorado River on the east. With those parameters I researched what is out there. While much is made of the urban population density along the coast, I found vast areas of desert which at different elevations support different kinds of plants and animals. People have inhabited these areas for many centuries and left their marks behind.
