Technique and materials used:
This artist’s book features a piano hinge construction using Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper as the pages and pins and Zander Mills Elephant Hide paper as the concertina fold spine and decorative elements. The work features hand lettered calligraphic texts using folded and pointed pens with walnut and white inks and watercolor.
About the work:
This work reflects not a physical, geographic place, but rather a dreamed-for metaphysical land whose landmarks include compassion, humanity, justice, and enlightenment. Extremists highlight a series of historical figures identified by Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1963 letter from the Birmingham jail. In this letter, he reflects on being identified as an extremist by his critics then calls us to consider a cast of religious and political characters that he considered worthy examples of the label.
