Artist Statement
“Homage to NMAAHC” is a flag book created to celebrate the National Museum of African American History & Culture. Sarah Matthews was inspired after several visits to the museum to create a work in response to what she experienced and learned. The base layer of the flags is from a digital collage of the photos taken at the museum. On top of the base layer are original designs by the artist, followed by an excerpt of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”
