CALL FOR WORSHOP PROPOSALS
The Focus on Book Arts (FOBA) conference is looking for instructors for the fifteenth biennial conference. Conference dates are Wednesday through Sunday June 23-27, 2021 with a check-in day of Tuesday, June 22, 2021. This event is held at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon about 30 miles west of Portland, Oregon. We are looking for beginning, intermediate and advanced level workshops. We would also like to consider master level workshops that may involve critical problem solving or more advanced hands-on work.
The format of the conference is in classes of one, two, or three days. All three-day classes will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. There will be a limited number of one day classes each day. Instructors may submit proposals for the length of days they think appropriate for their class. We encourage instructors to submit a combination of workshops that cover the entire five days of the conference. Each day would be six contact hours, 9:00 until 4:30 with a 1½ hour lunch break. In addition to the individual workshops, the conference will host evening activities and receptions, a trade show, a sales store (The Artists’ Fair), and a Faculty/Staff exhibit. Instructor compensation and benefits are as follows:
Instructors will be paid $500.00 per teaching day. Instructors should determine their own materials fee per student; this should include an estimate of cost for any student materials that may need to be shipped as we do not cover shipping costs separately. We recommend that you include materials that are unusual or difficult to find in your provided materials. The materials fee will be collected with registration and will be mailed to instructors with the rest of their funds. This payment will be sent to the instructor within two weeks of the end of the conference.
Instructors traveling by land transportation over 50 miles from the Conference site will receive the IRS mileage standard at the time of the conference up to a total of $400.00. We are willing to discuss special circumstances for road travel, if arranged in advance. Travel by airplane will be compensated with a travel stipend not to exceed $750.00. This amount includes the most economical round trip airfare, land transportation to and from the airport and any baggage fees. Full travel reimbursement will be given to instructors who offer 3 or more days of instruction. Instructors teaching a single day or a 2 day class will be eligible for up to $400.00 in travel reimbursement.
Instructors are required to submit 1 or 2 works for the Faculty/Staff Show. This show will be held at Pacific University. The work can be for sale with no commission while at Pacific University, but the artist is responsible for all financial transactions.
Instructors will be eligible to participate in the Artists’ Fair, which is an opportunity for attendees and instructors to sell their own products. Rules and costs for this will be available as we approach the conference.
Instructors are welcome to take classes at a 20% discount on registration fees; material fees are not discounted. Instructors are eligible for early registration.
Out of town instructors (more than 50 miles travel) will receive room and board on campus the night before and the day of their class(es). If the instructor wishes to stay longer, any additional room and board can be added on at the instructors own expense as space allows.
Instructors who travel less than 50 miles to the Conference will receive an on-campus lunch each day they teach. If requested, local instructors may receive room and board on campus the night before and the day of their class.
Please fill out the workshop proposal form on the right of this page. It should be filed electronically along with photos of the proposed product. The photos must be in jpg format, 300 dpi, and the longest measurement 7 inches. You may send up to 3 photos for each proposal. Please label them with your last name and something to identify which proposal they belong with. Good photos make it easier for us to understand what you are proposing. We will be using the same photos in the written materials, so please ensure your photos meet these guidelines.
