Lily’s Book: Charming Canvas Book with Pockets

Instructor: Leighanna Light
Skill Level: All Levels
Materials Fee: $25.00
Length of workshop: 2 days

Workshop description:

In this workshop you will create a sweet but sturdy book that is made entirely of canvas and embellishments. You will learn basic bookbinding skills and we will experiment with texture gels, gesso, plaster, molding paste, and ink to create fabulous backgrounds and pages. The book is about 5” x 7” but can grow larger after we add embellishments. The canvas pages are hardy and durable resulting in a book that can travel far and survive your most adventurous trips. We will fill the book with pockets which are perfect for your souvenirs, and secret compartments for those writings you do not want to share with the world. I love to show off my art journals, but I find that this sometimes prevents me from writing all that I want to say. The secret compartments let you write your heart out and still have a gorgeous art book to show to your friends! This is a fun, intense class with multiple steps, techniques and supplies. You will leave with a gorgeous art book that will be treasured for years to come.

Date: Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, 2017

Materials/equipment to be supplied by student

canvas: 36” x 41”, unstretched, unprimed. IMPORTANT- PLEASE GESSO BOTH SIDES OF THE CANVAS BEFORE COMNG TO CLASS. It doesn’t need to be expensive canvas, but the thicker the better. Gesso the canvas yourself. This makes a big difference in the way the canvas reacts to the ink. You can tear the canvas in half (36” x 20-1/2”) for packing purposes, but please do not tear it any smaller. You can purchase canvas at Dick Blick:

Utrecht Artists’ Acrylic Gesso: white, medium bodied, at least 6 oz.

Crafters Pick, The Ultimate Glue, 8 oz. bottle: this glue is best for this project. Please, NO SUBSTITUTES. You can purchase this glue at

Golden Fiber Paste: available at acrylic paint: a few of your favorite colors. I am in love with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paints, which are available online or at Michaels.

brushes: several inexpensive small- and medium-sized brushes used to apply paint and glue.
