Workshop description:

Make your own medium-sized sketchbook or journal that has an exposed spine and painted covers. The binding allows the book to open completely flat to any page, making it great to draw or write in. The binder’s board covers are transformed with many layers of glazing paint with a recessed niche for a unique shrink-art label. The book will be sewn on decorative tapes that are then laced into the covers and held closed with a loop and bone clasp. Participants will bring to the class the paper of their choice for the pages, mixing and matching to suit the media they like to use. Each participant will complete one binding during the workshop.


Date: Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, 2017

Materials/equipment to be supplied by student:

paper(s) of your choice for the text block: select paper that fits with the media you plan on using in the journal (watercolor, pen and ink, etc.) The journal’s format can be either portrait or landscape. Longest measurement is 9”. You will need approximately nine sections of three to five folios each (that depends on the weight of the paper.) Pre-fold the paper and see if the spine is about ¾” in thickness. Remember to keep grain direction parallel to the fold.

paint brushes: flat, small and medium size
metal ruler (12”)
bone folder
heavy-duty utility knife with new blades
X-acto knife and sharp blades
cutting mat
glue brush: small and medium size
colored pencils
1-3 rubber stamps: about 3” in size, to make the shrink-art labels


jeweler’s saw
dusk mask
reading glasses
hair dryer (to speed up the drying process)

methyl cellulose
sandpaper (220 and 400 grit)
shrink art material
Dixie cups
2 Jeweler’s saws and blades
small drill

numerous small tools such as punching cradles, needles, awls, etc.
